This show calls for our creative community to turn to the art of assemblage.

 We ask that the art be made with materials not originally intended as art supplies.

Assemblage was intrinsic to Futurist, dadaist, and Surrealist art and has never ceased being a compelling form. Right now, in contemporary artmaking, many artists are choosing to create works that speak powerfully to what they are living through, using objects and consumer products that capture a moment in time or a place; they ask us to consider stories through materials that may mean nothing to some people but are key to others. The materials can indicate danger, or vulnerability or resistance and resilience. Like all art, the work adds to the historical and cultural memory bank.

 

Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, Louise Nevelsen, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Cornell, and Mike Kelley are just a handful of artists that embraced assemblage and found object art. The form was revolutionary in its inception and has gone on to be a means of examining our culture with seriousness, humor, and irony.
